Chinese Trench Art, Bellicourt 1919

Hi all. This is a recent acquisition. Although hard to photograph it is decorated with Chinese characters, a sparrow on a branch and "Bellicourt 17- 7-19." On the one hand it appears to be like a standard Trench Art tobacco jar, although I cannot get the two sections to come apart and do not want to force it. But then why has it got the unnecessarily large handle? I had thought that maybe it was a lamp but there is nowhere to run a cable and nowhere to fit a bulb. When reversed it looks like a stick grenade.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks and all the best.

Unusual ...... and no idea..  Would it be possible to do a "rubbing" of the Chinese characters and share them?  A translation may then be possible and a clue to provenance established?

I have messed around with the brightness and contrast to take some photos. I think they came out OK, maybe someone can translate them?

All the best.
