Guessing this is a sign from WW2..........late 1944, possibly erected by the Canadians whose northern advance towards Antwerp and Holland encompassed the Belgian coast;?

The British and American areas of advance were further to the east

I would say it's from the winter 1918/19 (at least after the end of the war). But the OP should at least have given the IWM reference, which would make a search easier (as most pics belong to series or have some additional info).

Jan etc, yes if I had the catalogue number I would have used it, it's just one of some miscellaneous pics I have.

And yes, a likely time would be late 1918 - 1919.

Peter,

Sorry I can't help.

Except : The photo appears part of a Chapman Charles (Australian soldier?) collection, "Scenes of the Western Front 1917-19" of approx. 250 ? North of France ... Armentières, Bailleul, etc. Maybe a few more of (near) Ypres, but I only had a quick look.

(But I did see one named "Ruins of a pill box at Anzac House Ypres". Somehow I think you may be ... interested ?  :-) )

No idea what that "Faubourg" on the wall is or means.

Catalogue number .... Is it IWM HU 138428 ?

That should be (part of?) the name of a café, I would assume. Unfortunately, I couldn't immediately find something like that in Ypres.

Jan,

I found that there was a Café "Au Faubourg" in the Dikkebusseweg, near the Pannenhuisstraat. Now a "fitness ruimte".

But my information is from after ... 1945. (Westhoek Verbeeldt

No idea of course if this is the right place !

Do you think you recognize the ruins (tower ?) in the background of Mebu's photo ?)

Aurel well done for the index number, spot on.

Interesting series, quite a few are identifiable locations, eg HU 138434 which is corner of Haiglaan-Elverdingestraat (system will not let me download a copy). Some would make good then/now pictures.

.

Time period may be immediately post war: some pics have soldiers present, some show signs of rehabitation- maybe February/March 1919?
