Remembered Today:

George Nafziger collection

Many Pals will be familiar with the work of George Nafziger, who produced books and papers on historic Orders of Battle for several nations and various campaigns. Some year ago he donated his collection to the US Army, and a whole host of them appear on their website, https://cgsc.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/p15040coll6.

Those relating to WW1 are compiled from acknowledged sources such as the British Official History, but there are one or two chuckles amongst them, such as "Gallopoli", and the Defences there, having been compiled from C E W Bean's work, omit most troops other than ANZACS, but one gem I found among the Mespot orbats included this (my emphasis):

Division Troops:
33rd Cavalry Regiment (2 sqns)
86th Heavy Battery, RGA (4 guns)
104th Heavy Battery, RGA (4 guns)
1/5th Hantsfordshire Howitzer Battery, RFA (4 guns)
12th Field Company, Sappers & Miners
Simur Imperial Service Company, Sappers & Miners
12th Divisional Signals Company.

I can forgive Simur for Sirmur, but I am still wondering where he got Hantsfordshire from!

All that said, they are a useful collection and FREE to download as pdf files.

There is a 2012 edition of the Nafziger Orders Of Battle Collection Finding Aid available on Archive.org if anyone wants to browse through it, to see what is there, or search.

Finding Aid 2012 edition

Use the Finding Aid to locate titles - there are WW1 entries digital page 276 and digital page 293 and perhaps elsewhere. Note however the URLs (links) within this volume are no longer valid. The first part of a 2012 URL/link http://usacac.army.mil/cac2/CGSC/ must be replaced by https://usacac.army.mil/sites/default/files/documents/ to form a URL/link such as https://usacac.army.mil/sites/default/files/documents/carl/nafziger/914BXAA.pdf (USA Army website).

Cheers
