james drury Posted 9 October , 2020 Share Posted 9 October , 2020 Hi all sorry to pic brains once more. have a relative who moved from the 12th Labour Bttn Lincolnshire Regiment to the 16th Labour Company On his service record he was allocated a new service number 9397. I understand that 1&2 Companies of the 12th Lincs made the 16th Labour Company given numbers 9001 to 9600 and 3&4 Companies made the 17th Labour Company numbered 9601 to 10200. On medal roll his is shown with a number of 29436. - just wondered if this was a typo or had other implications. Many thanks for the tips once again. Bordercollie Posted 11 October , 2020 Share Posted 11 October , 2020 I suspect the reason is more complicated than a typo. If you look at the Middlesex Regiment medal roll that includes the entry for Alfred Redfern there are other soldiers with Labour Corps service where there appears to have been confusion about their Labour Corps number. One number is typed in on the roll but then deleted and replaced with a different number in manuscript. Significantly Sidney Wilburn has the number 29563 typed in the roll which is deleted in manuscript and replaced with 9417. Both Sidney and Alfred served with 16th Company Labour Corps. Both 29436 and 29563 were in the block of numbers issued to men in 50th Company Labour Corps which was formed from 11th ILC LIncolnshire Regiment. These are the facts. I would suggest that one possible explanation for these facts is that as the Labour Corps formed these men were mistakenly issued with two numbers and the 29nnn series numbers were still recorded somewhere after the war and found their way onto the medal roll. As they both served in 16th Company Labour Corps the 9nnn number appears to be the correct number and the roll entry for Sidney was amended accordingly. It is surprising that the similar mistake in the entry for Alfred was not corrected at the same time.
