Remembered Today:

Pte. 28/50 John William Brown Northumberland Fusiliers

Bit of a newbie at this, so I hope someone can help.

I'm trying to find as much info on the above soldier as possible. I know he enlisted on 30/9/15 & was discharged as unfit for service on 28/11/18 from Northumberland Fusiliers A R (W). (Army Reserve due to his civilian occupation, I think) If I've understood correctly, he was in 28th (Reserve) Battalion. He was awarded the British War Medal, Victory Medal, War Badge & a pension. I'd like to know, if possible, which Battalion/Regiment he served overseas with. I'd be grateful for any help, as I've run out of ideas where to look & appear to be going round in circles.

Thanks.

Welcome to the Forum

Is there a reason why you have shown the first card for the RAF officer?

The 28/50 NF man served overseas with the 16th Battalion of the NF

Yes. Basically, I'm an idiot & posted the uncropped pic. Small phone screen and bad eyesight. It wasn't meant to be there. Apologies.

Hi David,

Welcome to the forum.

It might be worth taking a big breath, then posting everything about the man, that you're 100% certain about - including genealogical info, etc; and how you came to the conclusion that he was number 28/50 NF, and what you're not quite so certain about. That would help Forum Pals to pitch in. and try to target your man without duplicating research/facts that you already know.

As a slight aside, there is good advice on how to try to research a soldier here.

Good luck with your research.

Regards

Chris

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the advice, and for replying. It all started with a certificate of discharge that a workmate found whilst going through his late Nan's paperwork. He knew it belonged to his Great Grandad, who had lived in Byker, Newcastle & who had been in the nf. ( That's all he knew) The only info on it was his name, number (28/50) and Regiment, that led to medal index card with his dates of enlistment, and date & reason for discharge & on to a record of a pension (Bronchitis aggravated by service), which led to the war badge roll. I've never attempted anything like this, but I was intrigued, and determined to find as much as I could. It's addictive. Once again, thanks for the advice & reply.

Hi David,

A pension index card on Fold3 might point towards the reason why he was discharged sick.

As Russ has said, his medal roll record indicates that John only served overseas with the 16th Battalion. After registration their war diary is available as a free download from the National Archives - link.  I think that the problem that's left is in establishing when John was transferred to the Battalion, I didn't see a Star medal award for him, so that would imply that he wasn't with the Bn when it arrived in France in November 1915, and that he was sent over as a later reinforcement.

Chris

Hi Chris,

Thanks for that, it's the 1st time I've seen him mentioned officially as being in 16th Bn. NF. I saw the pension index card the other day, that made me wonder about the War Badge. I'm pretty sure that's him, 7 down from top. Though his name seems to be entered as a shortened version of Johnathan (I think). The regiment, number, and enlistment/ discharge dates match.
