Central Distribution Section (CDS) and Stationery Service (SS) pamphlets with no known location

Recommended Posts

Good afternoon everyone,

I've been continuing the work others on this forum have been doing in trying to catalogue the Central Distribution Section and Stationery Service Pamphlets. I've used 'The CDS/SS Pamphlets - A Provisional Listing', compiled by John Armatys and have tried to find a source for each pamphlet.

My main search locations have been the Imperial War Museum, Australian War Museum, Library and Archives Canada, The National Archives of the UK, The National Archives of Australia, The National Army Museum, The Portugeuse Defence Library's, Archives New Zealand and a general internet search. I've tracked down the vast majority of pamphlets at one or more of these locations and hope to eventually publish the list as a finding aid for benefit of researchers. I'd like to have it more complete and validated before that happens.

There are limitations to what I can do without physical access to the archives, and even online ordering is somewhat hit or miss. The main uncertainty is documents that are compiled under general heading or as part of larger series without a catalogue of each individual item, which makes it impossible to identify with certainty on a catalogue search.

There are about two dozen pamphlets for which I have no known location and about 60 where I have a possible, but unconfirmed location pending physically sighting the document in question. I reckon if I post the ones with no known or unknown locations, there may be people who have found them and can provide a source. I'd be grateful for any assistance.

Just came across this while trying to identify the correct publication details ...

Manchester University Library and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine both have copies listed, although the latter (as does IWM) dates it to 1917. There certainly was a 1915 edition, as per Flies at the Front. British Medical Journal (Sept 11 1915), pp. 411-412: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2303031/pdf/brmedj07248-0021.pdf/?tool=EBI.

Hello SeaJane,

Thank you for the spot. It's good to have another confirmation that the pamphlet is out there... hopefully it will eventually be uncovered in an archive somewhere.

GreyC,

Thank you for the link.  I believe that there may be another version out that that is specifically titled: Signal Organisation for Tank Corps (provisional) and may have been Issued in July 1917, but I have not been able to find a confirmed version anywhere.
