7790 Percy Rigaud Rathbone, AIF, died at No. 53 General Hospital on 14 April 1918 and was buried at Wimereux Communal Cemetery by Rev. W Hambidge, Chaplain to the Forces.

Does anyone know if the Rev. is Wilfrid Watkyn Hambidge?

There was only 1 CF with a similar name (Hambridge), and he served with the BEF from 17 Jul 1917 until Feb 1919. No further details as to location, but it has to be the same man.

I should add to my comments above that he is recorded on the MIC's and the RAChD archives as being the Rev Wilfrid Hambridge, so I'm sure it's the same man. He applied for his medals in 1940, so is assume that this spelling is correct.

A Rev W W Hambridge at the Museum of Army Chaplaincy

His interview card is 7/6/17 https://chaplains-museum.co.uk/entity/137489-ww-hambridge?q=hambridge

But I could read it as Hambidge

An interesting note on the rear.

Edit: there is a death of Wilfrid Watkyn Hambidge in LG in 1948 https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/38292/page/3035/data.pdf

Further edit; GRO have a death for William Watkin Hambidge 1948 M Quarter in Hailsham  Volume 05H  Page 267 Age 64 [which gives a YoB of 1884 - which would match his age in 1917 and his RACD interview card]

Thanks headgardener and Matlock1418.

Wilfrid Watkyn is definitely Hambidge not Hambridge. So, an error on MIC and Army Chaplaincy card ?

1.  ancestry:

2.  William Watkyn - son of grocer George Pratt Hambidge. Kelly's Directory 1915 - Burford, Oxfordshire:

Most certainly errors there

Actually his MIC was indexed by TNA as "Wilfred Hambridge" - and that has multiplied elsewhere!!

And Ancestry as "Wilfred Revel Hambridge" [The 'Revel' being a mis transcription of "Rev'd"]

Hey ho - you've got it sorted!
