Amongst this man's military records is a letter from a Huddersfield engineering firm to the C.O., Records Office, Middlesex Regiment dated 26th July 1916 stating that the above soldier, who had been working for them on munitions,  would be available as from 5th August for redeployment in another munitions factory. This followed a visit by a representative of the Munitions Office. Was it common for serving soldiers to be employed on munitions work?

If they had skills that were better used in munitions works it wasn't unusual.

He was a patient at the Royal National Orthopedic Hospital in Great Portland Street in late Feb early March 1915 and at the Military Hospital in Chatham in April - with knee problems... So not able to rejoin his unit but able for munitions work. He died of wounds in May 1918 while serving with the 13th.

His service records are available on Ancestry here

Mike

PS His records show four brothers serving - two in the 8th Hussars and two in the 4th Middlesex

Thanks guys. He was a butcher's assistant before joining up, so I would guess he had no engineering skills. I have seen his records Langdon and his problems with knees and ankles would indeed have made it difficult for him as a front line soldier. I just thought it odd that he should be engaged in munitions work as a serving soldier the same year as conscription was introduced.  Thanks once again.
