Jaeger6 Posted 25 September , 2020 Posted 25 September , 2020 The fights at the Eastern Front took place in eastern Romania, mainly along the river Sereth and north of it. After the armistice at the Romanian Front he was transferred to Ukraine. He received an Iron Cross 2nd class on 9 August 1917. In September/October 1917 he suffered from dysentry. Alfred was released from the army due to the demobilization on 2 February 1919. He moved to Dresden, Leipziger Str. 84 afterwards. One thing that seems strange to me is that the country where he was born was named Kingdom of Prussia. To me it looks as Bavarian as it can be.
GreyC Posted 25 September , 2020 Posted 25 September , 2020 (edited) It´s Landshut in Schlesien/Silesia. GreyC Edited 25 September , 2020 by GreyC

Zeuner Posted 26 September , 2020 Author Posted 26 September , 2020 Thanks so much everyone. You are amazing and so helpful! Good questions on Schönberg, districtof Landshut, Prussia. We thought he was born in Schömberg - a village close to Calw/Stuttgart in the State of Baden-Württemberg. Old German is so hard for me to read. Looking at his son’s birth certificate from 1895 it does say Schömberg, Kreis Landeshut but the stamp on it is Preuss.Standesamt. His father’s death certificate from 1900 lists Hündsfeld, Krs Öls, Eastern Prussian Province which is indeed Poland. You all may have just given us the biggest genealogical hint yet while filling us in on the military bits as well. Thank you!!

charlie2 Posted 26 September , 2020 Posted 26 September , 2020 His Aunt Karoline Rünkert, a housekeeper living at Ring 42 in Schömberg/Schlesien is recorded as an additional next of kin in his Militärpaß. The house belonged to Heinrich Schubert, a master cobbler. There is a 1911 address book for the area which may be of help to you. http://www.merzdorf-im-riesengebirge.de/fileadmin/merzdorf/adressbuecher/abl_1911/abl.htm Charlie
