Remembered Today:

Robert "Tubby" Garrett

Robin Garrett

Recommended Posts

Robert Garrett was serving in 22nd Derajat Mountain Battery immediately before the Great War . The only other thing I know about him was that he was married in London on 5 Aug 1914; wife's name was Win.

Grateful for any information about him. Thanks

There's a book available "Historical Record of 22nd Derajat Pack Battery Frontier Force" which references Lieut. R. C. Garrett:

"Lieutenant R. C. Garrett joined at Malakand on 3rd October 1910 from 104 Heavy Battery R.G.A"

"Lieutenant R. C. Garrett R.A. - Proceeded on one year's leavce out of India, 27th March 1914"

Promotion to Captain

"No. III section under Captain R. C. Garrett R.A., proceeded to Bhamo in relief of No, II section"

Found this on National Library of Scotland too:

Thanks Dominion.

That confirms he was Robert Clavell Garrett. I have found his MIC, which shows he had the Victory and BW Medals.

He won't appear in the 1911 Census but perhaps someone could kindly find him in the 1901 one.

Found his birth record in Bolarum, Madras and his 1901 Census page listed as a Cadet. Finally I found his passenger manifest travelling from Liverpool to Rangoon.

Which medal card???     This is the medal card reference from  TNA "Discovery":

Medal card of Garrett, Robert Clavell. Corps: 30th Mountain Battery. Rank: Lieutenant.

War Office: Service Medal and Award Rolls Index, First World War. Everitt H - Gibson A. Medal card of Garrett, Robert Clavell. Corps Regiment No Rank 30th Mountain Battery Lieutenant. Royal Artillery Major.

The National Archives, Kew - War Office, Armed Forces, Judge Advocate General, and related bodies
  1914 - 1920

WO 372/7/213237

This shows, on top of the book entry, that he served with 30th Mountain Battery.  The second entry suggests he was a wartime Major in the Royal Artillery-  but where and with which units?? If he was on year's leave from March 1914, then he may well have been in England at the outbreak of war-4th August-the day before his wedding- and required to report to the India Office/War Office as many shortages of officers in the British Army were filled by requisitioning Indian Army officers on leave or furlough.

Great research - thanks Dominion and JP.

The medal card I found was the TNA one.

Those 9 x 3rd class in the above LG, are the only ones awards for WW1, so a very rare award.

He married Win Petrie, they had Winifred R in 1919 and Cynthia A in 1925.

In 1939 Robert and Win were living at 62 Blackborough Road, Reigate.

Richard was described as Major ( Retired).

Their Silver Wedding was reported in The Kent & Sussex Courier, 11th August 1939.

Very few citation / recommendations exist for foreign awards, your best bet would be War Diaries and local newspapers

I expressed myself badly. I wasn't expecting to find a citation but wondering what campaign it was awarded for.

Given the dates and the award by a Persian regime that at the time was a recalcitrant puppet of Britain, I suspect that it might have been in connection with Indian Army support to the beleaguered South Persia Rifles (SPR): http://www.greatwar.ie/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/South-Persia-Rifles.pdf
