IS is true that so many French and Germans were buried at Verdun that the bones actually came to the surface years after the war ended?

I know places around Ypres where you can find plenty of human bone fragments still today...

Might it be true that so many dead - or fragments of them -   at Verdun were unburied that their bones remained on the surface for years ?

The giant ossuary at Douaumont attests to this.

It is still the case that if you do any digging at Verdun, body parts are still found. It's totally illegal to dig there, and the penalties for being caught run up to 10,000 euros and six months prison, but people still do it.

Unbelievably there is a brisk trade in body parts.

Any found 'legitimately', for example during building or renovation work are placed in the Ossuary.
