aim Posted 9 September , 2020 Share Posted 9 September , 2020 Howard, Percy David, RM Musician 1482, received St Georges Medal, according to his Service Record. Would this be a gift from the Russian Government for being at the Battle of Jutland? Could we work out what grade it was? aim.
RNCVR Posted 9 September , 2020 Share Posted 9 September , 2020 Possibly, Imperial Russian Govt awarded many Medals & Crosses of St George for Jutland. Crosses are usually 4th class, but uncertain what class medals(if they were graduated in classes) were. Medals were of lower class than Crosses. Pretty certain Horatio has the roll, he will be along shortly to confirm or deny. Best...Bryan
horatio2 Posted 9 September , 2020 Share Posted 9 September , 2020 St George's Cross 4th Class per the listing in "Britain's Sea Soldiers" (Blumberg) (one of 100+ such awards). Since he spent the entire war in HMS MARLBOROUGH, the award for Jutland is possible but it may be, July 1918, for his entire service

If I still have it, I will check when I have time.

aim Posted 10 September , 2020 Author Share Posted 10 September , 2020 Many thanks to the three of you for this. ForeignGong noted that the awards do not appear to have been gazetted. I noticed that I could not find this award in the London Gazette yesterday, and it struck me later that he might not have permission to wear the medal - a pity for him and his relatives as I could find several other entries if I remember correctly. aim
ForeignGong Posted 10 September , 2020 Share Posted 10 September , 2020 Hi aim The Admiralty Fleet Weekly Order No 1774 was the authority to wear the medal. Not all foreign awards had to be gazetted, to allow the recipient to wear them. Hopefully he did wear it with pride. I recently did some research for a lady and the recipients medals are below. RNCVR Posted 10 September , 2020 Share Posted 10 September , 2020 Further to Horatio's post above, I can confirm that Musician Percy D. Howard, RMB 1482, was awarded St George medal 4th class as per AFO1774 of 30 May 1918. " for services rendered in the Battle of Jutland." His name appears on page 13 of the AFO. horatio2 Posted 11 September , 2020 Share Posted 11 September , 2020 Very helpful, Bryan. Nice to have confirmation of the Jutland link (albeit 2 years after the event!). Thanks.
RNCVR Posted 11 September , 2020 Share Posted 11 September , 2020 Yes, it took almost 2 yrs to publish the Imperial Russian awards, by that time the Tsar & monarchy had been abolished well over a yr. There may have been other awards for actions after Jutland but I am unaware of any subsequent AFO's concerning Imperial Russian awards.

Thanks also to RNCVR and Horatio2. aim There wasn't a specifically WEEKLY Fleet Order. but they did come out at more or less weekly intervals. Admiralty Fleet Orders were replaced in 1964 by Defence Council Instructions - the same thing, but theoretically published on a tri-service basis. In fact, each service published its own orders - because most would be of interest only to one service - but from the same place.
