JulianB Posted 4 September , 2020 Share Posted 4 September , 2020 Admission and Discharge Registers for 139 Field Ambulance (TNA MH 106, 155 156 and 157) which was part of 41st Division records that 20/781 Pte Thomas Donaldson 20/DLI had a shrapnel wound in the right eye. He was – in his Pension records it notes that a piece of metal struck Donaldson’s right eye but ‘had been removed’ in the field. He was aged 31 at the time and came from South Hylton in Sunderland. His sight was saved and he went on to serve with 1/9th Durham LI. He survived the war and was transferred to class Z Reserve in 1919. (I am gratefull to John Sheen for this information.) I would be very interested to know if there are any surviving letters to his family about his injury....I have a letter about the other side.
