Remembered Today:

Northants or not ?

Old trousers

Recommended Posts

Hi,

This is Sydney Turrell born 1888 Stretton on Dunsmore, Warks.

I think he is Pvt. 49851 Northamptonshire Rgt but would very much appreciate someone confirming the Rgt from the picture attached.

Thanks

The picture I think dates from 1916

First thoughts on the cap badge is tank corps...but I’m certainly no expert.

Dave.

Edit....There is a medal card for a Robert S Turrell, A.s.c. And tank corps here.....https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?_phsrc=FLW9&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&indiv=1&_phtarg=FLW8&dbid=1262&gsfn=Sydney&gsln=Turrell&gsfn_x=NP_NN_NIC&gsln_x=1&cp=11&new=1&rank=1&uidh=l37&redir=false&msT=1&gss=angs-d&pcat=39&fh=5&h=4948218&recoff=&ml_rpos=6&queryId=5e4f3eaf214ac2714702b52e9b0ba4c8

I like Tank Corps. Really don't think its Northants. Sorry. I say that because there are Tank Corps badge variants that fit and especially the very top of the somewhat indistinct badge/ that is at an annoying angle for me is really problematic for Northants. There are other less striking issues too.

I too believe it’s the Tank Corps, a quite distinctive badge.

Definitely Tank Corps but the crown looks odd. It looks like the top half is either missing or buried in the cap somehow.   Pete.

The latter I think Pete.  Not uncommon with soft caps.

This makes me wonder if the photo does show Sydney Turrell, as his medal card refers to Northants Regt and makes no mention of the Tank Corps. There was a Robert Samuel Turrell in the Tank Corps, but no-one else with that surname (apart from 2nd Lieut Walter Turrell).

Also, I don't think the photo was taken in 1916 as the Tank Corps cap badge didn't start to be issued until the second half of 1917. Before that they wore the Machine Gun Corps cap badge (representing the Heavy Branch of the MGC, the former name of the Tank Corps).

All the best, John

That makes sense to me too.  The cap badge issue in 1917 is key as an indication of date span.
