A friend of mine asked me to post these photos in hopes someone might know if this is for the American BAR rifle or something else?

Steve,

I.M.A.-USA has a set of night sights for sale on their website that are for a Vickers machine gun. The pictures are similar to the pictures you posted but definitely not the same.

I thought the larger pictures showed the sights attached to an Enfield rifle. The first picture appears to show the front sight attached in between the Enfield front sight protectors while the rear sight is attached between the rear sight protector. This is my unscientific guess.

It will be nice to know what the sights do fit as I am probably wrong!

On second thought could the sights be on a Mk.4 Enfield? It appears the bolt is open and the bolt head is under the rear sight. Once again, a guess.

The gun in the pic has to be a P14 or US 1917.

You can see the E for Eddystone, and the mauser style bolt release, as well as the rear sight ears.

I agree.

Probably an M1917 as I see no volley sight peep base on the left side.

I did a quick scan through most of my M1917 references and I do not see mention of such an attachment anywhere and I have not seen one previously that I recall.

Chris

EDIT: this site would suggest it (or one very similar) is for a BAR

Just check with my friend, he said, yes, that one photo, he put the rear site on a P17 , saying the P17 and BAR rifle, the top of receivers are very much alike, he found a reference in a book just now. That is correct rear nite site, but the front is different

here the page he found , showing the rear
