Gunner Bailey Posted 19 August , 2020 Share Posted 19 August , 2020 I hope someone can enlighten me here. I've got a set of 13 maps for the 1st July 1916 produced by the Ordnance Survey (Historical Branch) in 1929. Were these from the Official History? I've seen elsewhere on the forum reference to a set of 6 maps from the Official History, so I'm confused. Were there different set produced for different editions? If so what do these go with? The maps are as follows: 1 The Somme Battlefield 1916 (topographical) 1a The Somme Battlefield 1916 (Military Grid) 2 The Objectives for 1st July. The Battle of Albert 3 Situation Western Front 30th June 1916 4 General Situation at Zero 1st July 1916 and position of reserves 5 The Attack of XIII Corps & the French XX Corps on 1st July – The Capture of Mantaubon 6 The Attack of the French Sixth Army on the 1st July 7 The Attack of XV Corps on the 1st July – The Assault on the Fricourt Salient 8 The Attack of III Corps on 1st July – The fight for La Boiselle and Ovillers La Boiselle 9 The Attack of X Corps on 1st July – Astride the River Ancre – Their fight for Thiepval 10 The Attack of XIII Corps on 1st July - North of the Ancre – Their fight for Beaumont Hamel and Serre 11 Gommecourt 1916 – The Attack of VII Corps on the 1st July 12 Result of the fighting on 1st July with the positions held at nightfall. charlie2 Posted 19 August , 2020 Share Posted 19 August , 2020 Yes, they belong to the OH. The maps are from the map case to France and Belgium 1916 volume 1. As far as I am aware there was only one edition of that volume. Charlie
Gunner Bailey Posted 20 August , 2020 Author Share Posted 20 August , 2020 Thanks very much Charlie. I wonder what the set of six relate to? Sorry for the delay in getting back to you - website issues! John
charlie2 Posted 20 August , 2020 Share Posted 20 August , 2020 John I think we have all had that problem one way or another I am presuming the 6 maps refer to the Somme, in which case they would be from the Maps and Appendices volume to France and Belgium 1916 volume 2. The maps are Battle of Flers - Courcelette 15-22nd September Battle of Morval 25-28th September Battle of Thiepval Ridge 26-30th September Battle of the Transloy Ridges 7-20th October Fourth Army Ops 23 October - 5th November Battle of the Ancre 13-19th November Charlie
Gunner Bailey Posted 20 August , 2020 Author Share Posted 20 August , 2020 Thanks very much Charlie if the 6 are as good as the 13 that's a comprehensive set. John
