Remembered Today:

Royal Scots Fusiliers Medical Officer

Good evening all,

I do appreciate that this is a very specific, very targeted question and if anyone can give me an answer then you would genuinely be a legend. Still, on the off chance that there are some utter experts on here, does anybody know, by any chance, who was the Medical Officer attached to the 1st Bn Royal Scots Fusiliers in August 1914?

Thank you so much in advance.

Good afternoon Alf,

I've read the War Diary from August to December 1914, but unfortunately a doctor is not named until a Lieutenant arrives as a replacement in early December. Thanks for the help anyway, much appreciated. I'll keep searching!

This gives the detail of Pte Edward Piatt who was part of the RMOs team who entered the War in France on 14th Aug 1914. He was taken prisoner and sent to a POW Camp in Sennelager in Sept 1914.

Cpl George Bardwell was also part of the RMOs team he was badged RAMC and died in 1920.

Doesn't answer your question, but hopefully helps a wee bit.

Good morning Rob,

Thank's for the help in closing in on my destination. It's a very specific, rather difficult search. I'm not sure if I'll be able to manage this one but I'll certainly keep trying. Thanks again for taking the time to help. It's much appreciated.

Unfortunately the British Army Monthly list for August & October 1914 doesn't show any medical officer attached to the 1st, 2nd or 3rd Battalions of the Royal Scots Fusiliers, though it has them for the Territorial Force Battalions.

I've done a quick rough and ready check of Officers of the 1st Battalion recorded in 1914 newspapers on FMP as Wounded \ Wounded & Missing and then tried looking for RAMC Officers similarly reported in the same Casualty List - the only unmatched possibility I could find in the ICRC records was a Clive Edmonde (Edmonds?) who was captured at Mons

A more systematic search might genarate other possibilities.

Cheers,

Peter

It was Clive Thornley Edmunds.  He is mentioned as being the MO i/c 1st Royal Scots Fusiliers on page 44 of the book ‘RAMC and the Great War’.

Good morning Barbara,

Thank you so much for the help. I thought I was looking for a needle in a haystack on this one. I did read the war diary and it does reference them getting a new Lieutenant on Dec 3rd. It looks like a Mister Ethington, but it is hard to make out. I did look on your website, not realising it was yours until just now, and it is excellent.

I really do appreciate the assistance, thanks again.

All the best,

Jonny.

That would be Lt Elkington. It is very likely it was Lt George Ernest Elkington but I haven't found 100% proof yet. He was serving with the 9th Field Ambulance when he was ordered to relieve Lt Frederick John Thorne as MO RSF on 2nd December 1914.  According to the A.D.M.S., 3rd Division war diary, Lt Thorne went to England between 4th - 10th December 1914.

It looks likely that Lt Thorne may have taken over from Edmunds.
