Robin Garrett Posted 12 August , 2020 Share Posted 12 August , 2020 i hope this is the right area for this. A friend of mine's grandfather was mentioned in dispatches five times and he has four of the certificates issued. He would love to find the fifth certificate. Would there be copies in his officer's file at the National Archives or anywhere else?
ForeignGong Posted 12 August , 2020 Share Posted 12 August , 2020 Hi My understanding is that the certificates were a once off thing given to the recipient and no other copies are available. The official notification was in the London Gazette.

ForeignGong Posted 12 August , 2020 Share Posted 12 August , 2020 They are very lucky to have the four they have, because paperwork is something that does not always survive.
Robin Garrett Posted 13 August , 2020 Author Share Posted 13 August , 2020 Poor chap was killed by enemy shellfire on 30 Oct 18, having commanded 82 Bde RFA for 2 years an ten months. His son joined the sappers and his grandson, my friend, followed his father into the RE. A military family, so that perhaps explains why the certificates survived. Sadly, his son said he gave his medals to the RA Museum but they have no record of them. The family would like to know where they are. They have tried the British Medal Forum, with no luck. A CMG and a DSO in the group.

Keith_history_buff Posted 31 May , 2021 Share Posted 31 May , 2021 I came across this, whilst looking for something else. Below is the rather bland letter sent to the wife of William James Littlewood. This is image 31 of the 75 images of his service record. Reproduction of this image is done for non-commercial purposes.
