Old Forge Posted 8 August , 2020 Share Posted 8 August , 2020 Could anyone point me to a good source for Lee Enfield drills (eg loading and stoppage drills). I'm wondering what the 1914 equivalent of 'cock, hook and look' was! Many thanks, Richard
4thGordons Posted 8 August , 2020 Share Posted 8 August , 2020 (edited) You probably want the 1909 Musketry Regulations (or the later updates I think 1915 was one). It has been reprinted a number of times -- I think there used to be a pdf version online but I am struggling to find it at the moment. sc-em Posted 12 August , 2020 Share Posted 12 August , 2020 You read my mind. That or a Sten but not really in keeping with the others. A Baker rifle would be nice but out of my price range
T8HANTS Posted 12 August , 2020 Share Posted 12 August , 2020 No 4 or No 5, but a Mk I Bren is such a lovely piece of engineering. Look at the smile on this Jerry's face when someone gave him one to play with, its like a boy and his puppy.
4thGordons Posted 12 August , 2020 Share Posted 12 August , 2020 Here's my go at something similar -- taken a few years ago - I have since added a Brown Bess to the front end. Chris
sc-em Posted 13 August , 2020 Share Posted 13 August , 2020 (edited) Nice. My Brown Bess was the one i took the longest to find to get right. Has yours got the handrail butt. Difficult to see from the photo. They are just a beautiful piece in my opinion. i wish I knew more generally but my wife allows me one a year as I have two many other things to tinker with. I know I should know but what’s the second from right? Carbine? I like it. Edited 13 August , 2020 by sc-em

Left to right the pic are: Pattern 1853 Enfield, P1864 Snider, Martini-Henry (long lever), Magazine Lee-Enfield MkI*, Short, Magazine Lee Enfield MkIII, Rifle No4 MkI, Rifle No5 MkI (aka unofficially as "jungle carbine") and L1A1(SLR) Chris
sc-em Posted 13 August , 2020 Share Posted 13 August , 2020 That explains it. Lol At least I got the carbine correct. similar to me with regard to the Snider, MH and Enfield. Have you managed to collect the bayonets are is that something you don’t particularly want?

Yes I have bayonets for them all except the SLR. I have tried to get bayonets to match most of my Great War rifles - you can see a few here:
sc-em Posted 13 August , 2020 Share Posted 13 August , 2020 Wow. That’s some collection. Are you UK based? Only usually see ones like that in US or Canada. I must admit I an tempted by starting a WW1 bayonet collection.
Fovant Posted 14 August , 2020 Share Posted 14 August , 2020 The website British Muzzleloaders has videos about gun drills from the Brown Bess and Baker Rifle through the Snider and Martini Henry to the various marks of Lee Enfield. 4thGordons Posted 14 August , 2020 Share Posted 14 August , 2020 Excellent selection. Really nice examples. Congratulations. One minor observation: the official way of fitting the sling (carry strap) is with the wire prongs facing outwards away from the wood, so you pass the sling back through the loop. like this: I do have a couple of WWI photos which show them attached "prongs in" but the vast majority show the prongs facing out and the sling passed from outside to in. Here are a selection of early rifles (I do not have a Metford ) MLE, MLE, MLE ,CLLE(IP). CLLE, MLE "range rifle" (cut to ShtLE length for use in rifle matches) and MLE con'd ShtLE I have also been lucky enough to find some p14s 2 of these are MkI (bottom 2) the others are MkI* all three makers (Winchester, Remington and Eddystone) and both stock styles. 3 are WRS 2 are not.
