Paul Clarke Posted 30 July , 2020 Share Posted 30 July , 2020 Wondered if anybody could help me identify an old artillery shell I found when helping my elderly Aunt clear some stuff from her bungalow. This was sat behind the television stand.... Thanks in advance..

Alan24 Posted 30 July , 2020 Share Posted 30 July , 2020 Welcome to the Forum. I'm sure someone will be able to answer your query here, as we have many experts on the subject. However, first things first, you must take all necessary actions to ensure that this piece is inert. Members here will not be able to do that for you - forum rules. I'm looking forward to hearing what this may be. Alan.
Paul Clarke Posted 30 July , 2020 Author Share Posted 30 July , 2020 Many thanks Alan, My Auntie thinks it's 'safe' but bare in mind she is 85 and can't operate the microwave I unscrewed the top and tried to see inside...only a small hole but it 'appears' to be empty... Chasemuseum Posted 30 July , 2020 Share Posted 30 July , 2020 Without a scale I can't be sure but appears be a British 15-pr shrapnel shell. These were the main British gun of the Boer War, obsolete by WW1 but saw service in artillery training in the UK and minor service on the Western Front. Should be markings stamped onto the underside of the base of the shell Cheers Ross
Chasemuseum Posted 30 July , 2020 Share Posted 30 July , 2020 This will give you a quick rundown also if you click on the photos of the ammunition and scroll through you will see what the base markings should look like. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BL_15-pounder_gun
Paul Clarke Posted 30 July , 2020 Author Share Posted 30 July , 2020 (edited) Many thanks Ross, You're a top man! Driving back from Liverpool to Ashford tomorrow morning so I'll check the markings properly when I get home. I've had a good peer inside and it seems to be empty so let's hope you don't see me on a news report tomorrow 😃 It's tucked away in the boot of my Kuga, and has been all day so I'm sure it's ok, although I wouldn't fancy being around it if it wasn't. Many thanks again fella... and what an interesting forum this is... I'll spend too much time reading through it I'm sure... 👍🏻 Edited 30 July , 2020 by Paul Clarke Fix a typo

For more information Google:- Passion and Compassion 1914-1918. Mike.
