dhubthaigh Posted 28 July , 2020 Share Posted 28 July , 2020 (edited) John Shaw No. 2820/265879 was one of the first detachment of the 6th Black Watch (T.F.) who landed in France on 2nd May, 1915. This man won the D.C.M. in October, 1918 - London Gazette : 265879 Sjt. J. Shaw, 1/6th Bn., R. Highrs., T.F. (Chester) In a local newspaper (17th February, 1915) John Shaw, Chester, appears in a list of 6th Black Watch (Reserves) who had enlisted at the Depot, Perth since 26th January. He also appears in a list of admissions to No. 2 General Hospital in June, 1915 aged 33 (DOB circa 1882). In trying to identify this man I have found a partial service record for a John Shaw 3798 (aged 32) who attested at Chester on 1st September, 1914 for service with the "42nd Highlanders". He joined at Perth on 2nd September, 1914, posted 8th Black Watch, and is then discharged "unfit for further service" on 7th January, 1915. His rank is L/Cpl.The reason for discharge is a pre-existing knee problem (loose semilunar cartilage) and he refused an operation. Given the information I 'think' it is the same man but is this possible - that he is discharged unfit with a long standing knee problem, almost immediately enlists in the 6th Black Watch, is passed fit, and then goes out with the first detachment some eight weeks later? ATNOMIS Posted 1 March , 2021 Share Posted 1 March , 2021 265879 Sjt J Shaw, 1/6th Bn R Highrs, TF (Chester) (LG 2 Dec 1919) On October 26th 1918, near Famars, where the advance was held up by an enemy machine gun firing from the flank, he with two men rushed the machine gun, killed the team of three enemy and took the gun. His bold action enabled the advance to continue. He showed throughout the operations most marked gallantry, and set a splendid example to all in the vicinity.
