War Gratuity suggests c Dec  SEP 1914 I suggest. But look for near numbers to confirm this.

Charlie

Edit   16015 and 16018 seem to be early (c13th) Nov 1914 as is 15990 series

Are you interested in other aspects?....apparently he was an athlete whose family ran the public baths.

As a manual calculation.

Hatfield has a war gratuity of £11 10s net - £13 10s gross.

The basic for a sgt was £8. This would then give us 23 months service at death and the month from 01 November 1914

Will probably know that Thomas was the brother of John Gatenby Hatfield (Jack Hatfield) the Olympic swimmer who competed in the  1912 Stockholm Olympic games winning three medals for Great Britain Jack served as Gunner 311491 in the Royal Artillery during the war (he survived)

Thomas is commemorated on his parents grave marker in Linthorpe cemetery

I have a photo of the grave marker and a bio among my files somewhere

A picture of Jack....I'm sure I read an article where he saved the lives of two drowning soldiers....I'll have a dig around.

Edit... an article from November 1915 saying that Jack had enlisted also said he had another brother serving in The Dardanelles.
