Remembered Today:

Where is Rattle Farm?

War Diary of 14 York & Lancs, entry for 2 September 1916, when the Bn was in the line a mile SW of Neuve Chapelle, contains the following:

"16 ORs detailed to attend 11th Class Brigade Bombing school at RATTLE FARM on the 3rd inst."

I cannot find a Rattle Farm in gazeteers, on trench maps from NLS, MacMaster Uni or anywhere else, nor on modern maps. Anyone know where it was?

If it was a bombing school then probably behind the lines?

RATEL seems to be a surname in Festubert, Cuinchy and surroundings (there's e.g. a garagiste Ratel in Cuinchy and Sailly-Labourse.

Maybe it's "Ratel farm"?

Marvelous how you can miss the obvious, isn't it? You're quite right, your Majesty, it's RATTEL not RATTLE.

Maybe it's the farm owned by Monsieur Ratel and family, which needed no further introduction to those in the know, in the area, at the time.

I've found a Rattel Farm - but it's a guest house in South Africa! I'd better keep searching.
