OLD ROBIN HOOD Posted 26 July , 2020 Share Posted 26 July , 2020 Greetings from the |Royal Forest of Sherwood. My latest research project is an interesting one, 19914 Private George Skinns East Yorks Rgt. George enlisted at Beverley on 09/09/1915 for the duration of the war. His age was stated as 39 years and 6 months. I believe he was serving with the 1st Battalion . He was wounded in action in France on 04/06/1916 his papers say 'gunshot wound thigh'. He was shipped home on 08/07/1916 and died on 22/07/1916 at 6.50am at Southwark Stely Hos. Interestingly he has suddenly become 48 years of age. he was buried at Hull Northern Cemetery. I have his census' that confirm he was born in 1868 at Metheringham Lincolnshire and in 1911 he was living with his wife Leonora in Hull. His age was given as 43. It would appear that George shed a few years in order to enlist. If anyone out there can give me any more details about him I would be most grateful. The Inspector Posted 27 July , 2020 Share Posted 27 July , 2020 (edited) Hi It does seem that George falsified his age to join up. He was married 2nd qtr 1891 at Caistor, Lincs. 7a, 1291. to Eleanor Louise (a) Saunderson 9.4.1869-1953. Perhaps he gave his correct age when he was married. Can't find a birth cert. to match 1868. 1911 census wife's name is Eleanor Louise. 27.4.17 his widow was living at 2 Devon Grove,(Scullpports)Lane,Hull...details on her son Leonard's attestation papers for AIF 3857 4th Light Horse.
