Admin RussT Posted 26 July , 2020 Admin Share Posted 26 July , 2020 An original pal of the 15th Bn Lancashire Fusiliers - upon raising the Bn he was placed in 10th Platoon of C Company, a photograph of which appears below - he would be on it somewhere. You might be lucky to find an article and photo in a local newspaper and be able to match it up with men in this Platoon Regards Russ
sadbrewer Posted 26 July , 2020 Share Posted 26 July , 2020 (edited) Just found on another Forum evidence of the flaws of Pals Battalions, according to that, his brother was 10571 Richard Roberts, joined together and killed together. clk Posted 26 July , 2020 Share Posted 26 July , 2020 (edited) Hi Paul, His Soldiers' Effects record names some sisters: Image sourced from Ancestry 4 hours ago, sadbrewer said: Just found on another Forum evidence of the flaws of Pals Battalions, according to that, his brother was 10571 Richard Roberts, joined together and killed together If that were to be the case (bear with me), there is a record for him (Richard) which shows: Image sourced from Findmypast Richard Roberts married Charlotte May Fisher. His Father is named as Joseph William Roberts. Image sourced from Ancestry Given his age, that would make Richard being born circa 1890. Hopefully that should make it relatively easy to pick up census returns for Joseph - Father Joseph William; brother Richard (born approx 1890); with sisters Rachel, Alice, and Margaret C...and genealogy stuff may flow. Edit 1: In the 1911 Census (Ancestry link), it looks like the siblings (no parents) might have been living together in 5 Winchester Place, Salford. Image sourced from Ancestry Edit 2: Looking at surviving service papers for just a couple of other 'near number' 15 Bn men show: 10510 Friary - joined up 29.9.1914 10543 Dank - joined up 29.9.1914 10570 10573 Jackson - joined up 30.9.1914 10597 Bowman - joined up 30.9.1914 After registration the Bn war diary is available as a free download from TNA (link). as is the Brigade HQ diary for the time of his presumed death (link). clk Posted 27 July , 2020 Share Posted 27 July , 2020 Hi Paul, 1901 census (Ancestry link) living with parents Joseph W and and Harriet (both born c1869) at 7 Pritchard Street, Salford. Image sourced from Ancestry Possible birth registration of Joseph (jnr)? Image sourced from Findmypast I don't know where the mothers maiden name in the transcription comes from, as it isn't shown on the linked image. Possible parents marriage? Image sourced from Findmypast What I don't quite understand is why Joseph (jnr) would have been registered as a Roberts if his parents didn't marry until a year after he was born? Regards Chris

Regards Chris The actual marriage doesn't affect the naming of children, if Roberts was the accepted father, the child would generally acquire that name....better that than the alternative of Father unknown.
