Ewing75 Posted 25 July , 2020 Share Posted 25 July , 2020 Hi, I’ve managed to find the army register of my great grandfathers effect. He died 23rd March 1918 by shell fire. I’ve been trying to find his location of death for many years, however have never pinpointed where it might be. In the register of effects it lists location of death, which annoyingly is unreadable to myself. i wondered if anybody with more experience of reading documents of this age could lend a hand? many thanks in advance-

FROGSMILE Posted 25 July , 2020 Share Posted 25 July , 2020 (edited) He seems to have been with the 63rd (Royal Naval) Divisional Signals Company Royal Engineers. As the unit would have been supporting the Divisional HQ, a war diary should indicate at least broad brush what was going on on 23rd March 1918. My guess would be a bombardment upon the HQ, and it’s rear areas, comprising of the usual mix around then of HE, fragmentation, and gas.
