PriadofDamocles Posted 22 July , 2020 Share Posted 22 July , 2020 Hello everyone, I've been researching my great-grandfather and his brothers' war service, and have come to a dead end for one of his siblings. Arthur Honour is the fourth of six brother and for a long time I could find next to nothing on him. A few days ago I head a breakthrough when I found his baptism record and his full given name - Arthur James Cooper Honour. Having dug a bit deeper I have found an Arthur James Honour of the Essex Regiment with the accompanying Index Card and Silver War Badge records but no service or pension records. Initially, given that he is born and raised in Oxfordshire, I thought that this might be a stretch to match the two together. However, given his brothers served in a variety of regiment (QOOH, RFA, Wiltshires and Royal Fusiliers) it perhaps doesn't seem so daft! There is nothing for him in the absent voter list for his place of birth, however I assume he could have moved between the 1911 Census and his potential enlistment date. Are there any other records I can consult which may help me identify this soldier and see if he is indeed a relative? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! With thanks in advance, Mark
Guest Posted 22 July , 2020 Share Posted 22 July , 2020 Colleagues here can read the Silver War Badge record and establish why he was discharged-there will be a reference to a specific Kings Regulation about it. The key question is whether or not he had any service medals-where the Medal Roll on Ancestry may well give the dates of service with a battalion of the Essex regiment. In addition, there are several ways to zap his name to establish when he may have been wounded,if indeed he was- the Casualty Lists have been zapped by several online databases eg FindMyPast and The genealogist. Dates of casualty reports are usually about 2 weeks in arrears - but given that there usually multiple casualties given in any list it is quite easy to backtrack into the relevant War Diary, usually available on Ancestry. For men of Essex and of the Essex Regiment, 2 local newspapers with lots of lists of casualties are available on British Newspaper Archives- viz. The Essex County Chronicle, and its cheaper offshoot, Essex Newsman. Should keep you going for a while!!

With thanks in advance, Mark It shows he enlisted 6 Sep 1914 and was discharged 7 March 1917 due to sickness. His number, #13167, is low enough that I'd expect it matches the enlistment date and it was his only number. The SWB role states he did serve overseas.
