chaz Posted 21 July , 2020 Share Posted 21 July , 2020 one of my collected soldiers is Edward Walter Buck, served as 104779 Royal Engineers, Inland Water Transport. his entry on CWGC says he was killed in an air raid on 08/02/1917 and is buried in Dunkirk Town Cemetery. however his service record has him Died in Rouen Allies AC Hospital.. also another page has him died of a gunshot wound to the neck. was there an air raid on Rouen hospital 8th Feb 1917? what killed him, the GSW or the Air Raid? if the air raid was on Rouen, why was he buried in Dunkirk 250 km away Rouen has a big cemetery itself? or am I missing something, I do see he had a couple of visits to Rouen for venereal disease, as many did!! charlie962 Posted 21 July , 2020 Share Posted 21 July , 2020 (edited) ajsmith is correct. WarDiary Dunkirk Base Commandant (free here if you register) for 8th Feb says 2 air raids that day and several people killed in second raid 9pm including "1 man IWT killed" I suggest the bombs were dropped on the docks or yards, Buck received kneck wounds, was carted off to Queen Alex AC Hosp where he died of wounds. edit edit- reading the Base Diary the bombing was frequent and it was supply points that were targetted. Surprising what detail a Base Diary hides. Edited 21 July , 2020 by charlie962
