Jools mckenna Posted 17 July , 2020 Share Posted 17 July , 2020 I bought this because of the 2 wound stripes on civilian clothes but was nicely surprised to see dates and a faded name of a RWF Pte, only problem is that I can't read it. I believe it to be Royal Welsh Fusiliers (not Welch) because on the 23rd of November 1917, the Royal Welsh Fusiliers sustained many casualties in the Cambrai area on that date. All 3 look to be related.
headgardener Posted 17 July , 2020 Share Posted 17 July , 2020 (edited) Reads "Pte Wm Conn... No. 48.... RWF" Perhaps Pte William Connell No. 48872 RWF? (as per the MIC's) If so, he got a BW&VM, but no SWB, so presumably not the man on the R. Edited 17 July , 2020 by headgardener
HTSCF Fareham Posted 17 July , 2020 Share Posted 17 July , 2020 I reckon the options are William Connell, William Cook or William Cowell.
FROGSMILE Posted 17 July , 2020 Share Posted 17 July , 2020 How about Conners? I see the ‘Conne’....but not two tall letters that would signify ‘ll’at the end.
headgardener Posted 17 July , 2020 Share Posted 17 July , 2020 (edited) I tried wildcard searches on First name: W* Surname: Co* Number: 48* Regiment: Wel* Fusiliers .... and William Connell 48872 seems the only fit. Edit: the others don't have numbers starting with 4 while serving in the RWF Edited 17 July , 2020 by headgardener

clive_hughes Posted 17 July , 2020 Share Posted 17 July , 2020 William Connell 48872 RWF. Born 1884. Enlisted 9.6.16, discharged from Depot RWF 9.4.17 (Sickness) having served overseas (SW Badge). Later resident 90 Market Street, Stalybridge. Curiously, no battalion shown on medal roll, just that he arrived at the Inf. Base Depot. Suffered from oedema of right arm, 50 per cent disability.
