Remembered Today:

Recruiting, Demographics and Poverty,

For anyone who researches a pre-war regular, the following may be of interest.

If their service record has survived, and they were from London, it could be worth seeing if their address is legible, and finding where it is plotted on the Booth poverty map.

I recently read an old thread on here, with reference to the high contingent of Londoners in the Scottish Rifles. I suspect that poverty pushed a fair few Londoners into joining the Scottish Rifles, and other regiments not associated with London where there were vacant posts.

If we could get back on topic, that would be great. I did suspect this thread had the possibility of being shut down if it were to deviate from its suggested theme.

Indeed.

For my benefit, and I am sure for that of many others, why is this topic a candidate for closure? There seems to have been some heavy excising of content which renders the last post incomprehensible.

It has degenerated into a series of personal attacks which, if they continue, will leave us no alternative but to lock/remove the thread.

@David Waterman, worth a read, if you do not already have the material. Hope your project is progressing well.

Thank you, Keith this is priceless information. Progress is steady, there have been some pretty interesting ground broken. I can share with you when complete.

A major thread, possibly THE major thread, from the defunct Victorian Wars Forum, plucked from the archive. Much of the VWF is lost for ever.

Excellent information in that thread. A pity the VWF is no more.

I see i'm quoted in the previous post by Mr Waterman, however i've no other posts in this thread?

The thread started off with the potential to be a powder keg. Unfortunately, the pretext of debating the supposed subject was ditched, and Glen is absolutely correct insofar as the hidden agenda took over.

Does anyone recall whether any attempts at analysis have been made, in respect of pre-war regular Boy soldier entrants?

Some birth place analysis that I have done has certainly thrown up military towns as birth places for some soldiers, those towns being far away from the depot of that county regiment. In lieu of gaining an apprenticeship, following father's footsteps seems to be a well-trodden path.

I was wondering how large the proportion of Boy entrants were from both Industrial Schools - whose curriculum was geared towards preparing boys for the army, as I understand it - and from orphanages. The locating of National Childrens' Home orphanages at Farnborough and Alverstoke does seem to be non-coincidental as far as proximity to the Army and Navy respectively are concerned.

May I suggest that it is the people who are making the attacks who should be blocked, not the thread? This is an important topic.

It is actually not that new, most of this information was posted here over the years. A quick search using variations of the title words shows quite a few e.g.

We have decided that this thread will not be removed but retained as a reference post in case anyone wants to look at it in the future,  Asa reference post, there is no need for any additional posts to be added so ir will be locked.
