Captain Osborn and Captain Osborn

Two men buried in my local Cemetery. I believe they may be father and son.

Captain George Osborn, was living in Grimsby, died on 20 Feb 1916, aged 62. He is listed as a Master Mariner.

Captain Charles Henry Osborn, who was living in Ilford, died on 23rd September 1919, aged 33

There are several Osborns buried in a very prestigious location in the local Cemetery. They both lie within 30 yards of each other.

Just wondering if anyone can find out on which ships they were serving when they died, as neither of them are on the CWGC database.

No. I only have their burial records.

Yes I know that one or both could be Merchant Navy but hopefully someone can still find out anything about their careers.

I have since found out, at the time of his death, that George had retired, but how long before his death, I know not

There are Board of Trade Certificates of Competency for a Charles Henry Osborn, born in Grimsby, as Second Mate (1905), First Mate (1908) and Master (1911) of Foreign Going Merchant Ships.  The ages given on each imply that he was born in or about 1886, so this would seem to be your man.

George Osborn (Born 15 May 1853 Gravesend) and Charles Henry Osborn (Born 8 May 1886) were Father and son.

Both were Merchant Seamen and both held BOT Masters Foreign Going Certificates of Competency, their careers and ships on which they served up to the time of obtaining their Master's tickets 1880 and 1911 respectively, can be found on Ancestry in UK Masters and Mates Certificates 1850-1927. Once those Tickets are obtained ships in which they served are no longer recorded so difficult to find.

A CR10 Identity Card for CH Osborn with photograph can be found on FindMyPast. It also shows his wife Ann was living in Ilford, and his death is recorded in the Romford district

The last ship I can find on which G Osborn served was the SS Nottingham in 1901. Owned by the Great Central Railway Co. it plied between Grimsby and Hamburg on a regular basis, I would imagine G Osborn finished his career with the Great Central Railway steamers, they were a job for life and positions much sort after.  The Nottingham served as the NOTTS a naval victualling store carrier Y822 during the war, but I would imagine GO had retired by then as he has no medal cards that I can find.

CH Osborn  served as Mate on the SOUTHPOINT 132814, and the ALGERIANA 112412 during 1915 and his CR10 shows that he was on the ROSSANO in October 1918 all these ships were owned by Furness Withy & Co.  He does not appear to have a MN Medal card either, possibly not surprising as he died in 1919 23 Sept.

The reasons for their deaths will probably only come to light if you obtain their Death Certificates as already suggested. Oldish age and influenza are obvious possibilities

George's wife Alice Elizabeth is not Charles Henry's Mother I cannot find out who she was but George is recorded on the 1901 Census as a widower, so both wives pre-deceased him!

Excellent work Carruthers.

Alice Elizabeth died on 5th April 1912. She is buried with Cap'n George, and a daughter, Carrie (Caroline) who died aged 16 in 1900

From what I can see, his first wife was called Caroline Hannah Andrews. She died in 1887 aged 32. It seems that Charles Henry was the last but one of the brood. Maybe as many as 7 kids. Cant find a burial for her, but she may have been buried in a local Cemetery that I dont have access to their records.
