Acknown Posted 4 July , 2020 Share Posted 4 July , 2020 (edited) Another Gazette entry: https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/29855/page/12066/data.pdf. He was promoted from OCdt to 2Lt on 22 Nov 16. LLT states that this battalion was in India throughout the war, but took part in the Third Afghan War in 1919. See: https://www.britishempire.co.uk/forces/yorkshireregiment.htm. Wilfred's MIC shows that he took part. No sign of the War Diary though. Acknown Addition: The 1926 'Third Afghan War 1919 - Official Account by Army HQ India' can be downloaded here: http://pahar.in/books/. It mentions 1st Yorks and its actions, but it is not clear which brigade the battalion was in during the campaign. Matlock1418 Posted 5 July , 2020 Share Posted 5 July , 2020 His MIC, post #6 and LG in post #9 cite his first forename as WILFRID - frequently [always for me] a query: Wilfred or Wilfrid? Always worth a double check. A GRO search gives it as "Wilfred" but as such a common mistranscription only by getting his BC would give something more a bit more definitive [and yet he and his family may have commonly spelt it otherwise!!] Mother's maiden name appears to have been Wilson - that seems likely to be somewhat clearer! Afghan war 1919 I think he would have received the India General Service Medal 1908-1935, with clasp 'Afghanistan N.W.F. 1919', but there are experts on here who will confirm/comment. For an example: click here. Acknown
RaySearching Posted 5 July , 2020 Share Posted 5 July , 2020 Wondering if there is another Mic for W H Mitchell ? Mitchell is not listed as having served as an officer with the 1st Bn in India prior to 1919 (if he had he would also have been entitled to the BWM) as he was commissioned 2nd Lt in Nov 1916 the Lt in May 1918 where was he serving during late 1916 to late 1918 ? and with which Bn of the Yorkshire Regiment ? His officer file in TNA may shed some light on his previous service with the Yorks and answer the above questions The Mic posted by the OP above lists Mitchell as having entered the theater of war in France on the 5/1/17 ?
