ejwalshe Posted 3 July , 2020 Share Posted 3 July , 2020 Battle of Albert, 3 - 4 July 1916. Scene of the successful British attack on La Boisselle by the 19th Division. British infantrymen give a helping hand to wounded German prisoners near La Boisselle on 3 July 1916. They are both wearing their equipment in 'fighting order'. One has an additional bandolier of ammunition, and each has an anti-gas PH (phenate hexamine) helmet in a small bag hung at the front. A first day objective, La Boisselle fell on 4 July 1916. mebu Posted 4 July , 2020 Share Posted 4 July , 2020 The German HQ at 3.43 is the same shot as appears in British IWM photo in John Giles' Western Front book, a good case of "then and then" rather than "then and now". It wasn't actually in the Bernafay Wood but in the quarry, now filled in, just outside the north of the wood, about 100 yards from the Bernafay Wood cemetery.
