Hi, help please.

The article attached to this was printed in a local paper. Wondering if there was a place where these deeds might have been recorded. I assume this is not recorded in the battalion war diary. He was 2nd Batt.

Cheers,

Gerard

Hi Margaret. It was 19th May 1917 - date of Article - so sometime before then you would have to assume.

I think these awards were nicknamed “Hickey’s parchments”.

Certain soldiers received a certificate of commendation signed by General Hickey which acknowledged his deeds and notes his name as being recorded on the records of the division. Where this is stored I don’t know. Possibly there is a monthly list in the War Diary of the 16th Div. I have never downloaded it.

Joseph Dowling 5504 enlisted on 2 September 1913. A detailed service record is on Ancestry. No specific mention of the above record that I can see on it.

He was 'awarded' quite a lot of detentions and 'F.P. no. 1'. GSW leg 24-07-1918.
