Pte. John James Roberts 232692 & 5826, 2/2 Bn. London Regiment

Military Medal London Gazette 28 Jan 1918, p.1396 - Schedule No. 137944

(nos. 134,500-137,999 were for October 1917 at Passchendaele Ridge).

2/2 Battalion were engaged in a major attack that began at 5.40am on 26 October 1917 under enemy barrage and machine gun fire

The Second Battle of Passchendaele was the final phase of the Third Battle of Ypres – a major Allied offensive in Flanders, Belgium, which later became known simply as ‘Passchendaele’. The 2/2 war diary reveals that they were engaged on the first day of 2nd Passchendaele (26-10-1917) in an attack NE of POELCAPPELLE, attacking across the LEKKERBOTERBEEK Valley and aiming to capture CAMERON HOUSE, MORAY HOUSE and holding ground around GLOSTER FARM. 3 officers were killed, 3 wounded and 3 missing. 32 other ranks were killed (1 more DoW), 180 wounded, 104 missing and 68 wounded and missing. 'There were numerous cases of men being submerged in the mud and shell holes...The evacuation of casualties was extremely difficult due to the ground conditions and the early casualties among battalion stretcher bearers'.

In the absence of his service records it is very difficult to discover his personal details. The LG states that he was from 'Clapham Common'.

He was granted Silver War Badge no. B305493 and discharged on 13 Feb 1919 aged 25 (b.1893/4). The SWB list states that he enlisted on 21 Feb 1916.

Thanks Charlie & Chris.

The battalion landed at Le Havre on 22 Jan 1917.

I'll check the war diary for the end of April 1918. I wonder if he recovered from the wound and was back with his battalion before 1 Sept. 1918?

I was interested to read the thread: 'Meaning of "mebus" in WW1 recollection' as the term was used in the War Diary in October 1917 regarding the enemy fortifications they were attacking.

Hi,

As a very general rule of thumb it took something like a month/a month and a half to appear on a casualty list, so you'd probably looking for something in March.

Chris

Thanks Chris. Another school-day for me!

The 2/2 Battalion suffered very badly during the German Spring offensive from 21 March 1918 - (National Archives' reference WO 95/3001/4):

By 10.15am on the 21st the WD states: 'The adjutant and 40 Other Ranks constituted the remnants of the Battalion' (NA reference at top):
