When did the U.S.A. start to put (in numerals) the month before the day?

Certainly pre ww1 in my experience.

Apparently it is as far back as the colonial era - they retained the earlier format whereas the UK moved to a format in line with the rest of Europe.

So, now that Britain is no longer in Europe, dates will revert to proper US-style?
