Does anyone know who was the commanding officer of the 48th Infantry Regiment between June, July, August 1915?

Hi Jeff,

CO of the 48th Regiment was Major Hüseyin Ilhami throughout the campaign. (Source: https://www.worldcat.org/title/on-yllk-harbin-kadrosu-1912-1922-balkan-birinci-dunya-ve-istiklal-harbi/oclc/621548846?referer=di&ht=edition) No biographical info available. An archive research is needed.

Here is a group photo of 48th Regt officers with Maj. H. Ilhami in front:

Thank you very much for your prompt reply, fills a gap I could not find the answer to, I presume that the 48th Regiment held southern end of Turkish front line during those months. Do you know when the 16th Division were brought to the Anzac front?

Yes, the regiment held southern portion (left flank) of the front as of 18 May. Further south (Kabatepe area) was held by the 77th Regt.

The first detachment from 16th Division (125th Regt) landed at Akbaş (Akbashi Liman in Eng maps) on the night of 27 April and attached to 19th Div. Remainder of the division (47th & 48th Regts) was deployed to Olive Groves area in early May. 47th Regt took over the front line on Lone Pine from 27th Regt on 17 May. 48th Regt briefly remained in reserve in Legge Valley. On the following day, deployed to Pine Ridge where it would remain for the entire campaign.

Emre,

That is more than I hoped for, fantastic. It does put another dimension to map No. 50 of the Brief History of the Canakkale Campaign, The Turkish General Staff Ankara (June 1914 - January,1916). thank you.

Hopefully further information of the regiments activities will eventually come to light from the archives.

Thank you Steve.

It seems that CO of the regiment was a German called Muther in late 1916-early 1917.

Main recruitting area of 16th Div was Adana-Mersin-Alexandratta triangle on the Meditteranean coast. Original Div HQ was at Adana. Here is a full list of recruitting places:

48th Regt was also called "Adana Regiment" as a reference to the city which was the regiment's main recruitting place.

Original formation of the division:

Apparently the mountain battery joined the division sometime later.

Emrezmen,

Mate intersting, I see a Artillery 6th Bn of two what looks like Snider (Schneider) Batteries

Large numbers of Schneider guns were in the Ottoman Army at that time, most part of the so call 52 guns captured during the last Balkan War.

Whats intersting is not that one was in the 16th Div, that its was call the 6th Bn, I wonder what they called its two batteries?

I have Schneider guns in the 3rd,, 4th 5th and 6th Divs, as well as a number of other higher formations, but none in the 16th Div, only the Kazim Bey Div in Thrace later formed into the 51st Div in Mespotania.

Stay safe

Cheers

Emrezmen,

I notice the Offical History by the General Staff page 224 mentions the 16th Div having in July 1915

The 16th Division was made up of the 47th, 48th, 77th, 125th Infantry Regiments each having
three battalions, one artillery regiment formed of two artillery battalions each having two
batteries and the units attached to the division which were one engineers company, one
battery, one Mantelli artillery company, one Nordenfelt company and the 16th Division
Medical Company.

Cheers

  • 2 weeks later...

Emrezmen,

Mate, I was checking the German officer you mention as commander during 1916 to early 1917

I show two officers by that name in Palestine, but they be the same man?

Muther    Maj    Yildirim ordusu 48. Piyade birligi komutani (48th Infantry unit commander Yildirim Army) in Turkish Regt is Alay as you know

I also have this man

Muther    Maj    CO 702nd Bn see Orbat 1917 replaced Raith - Filistin'de Alman Asya Ordularinda görevli (Served in the German Asian Corps in Palestine)

As I said they are possibly the same man?

The 48th Regt officers I have are;

48th Regt (Adana Regt) - Ahmed Bey to Maj Huseyin Ilhami (Ilham Bey) 5-15 (possibly Maj Muther 1916/17) to Maj Sevki Bey 1917/18  PoW 1918 around Damas

1Bn - Abdul Karim Bey

3Co - Lt Ali Effendi

2Bn - Capt Abdürrahim Efendi  PoW 1918

6Co - Lt Hadi Efendi PoW 1 Plat/6Co - Lt Ibrahim (Sogaç) Efendi  PoW 1918

Cheers
