Thatww1pigeon Posted 9 June , 2020 Share Posted 9 June , 2020 Here I’ve got with what I am very confident is a German Bread bag. I have done some research, it seems that the ww1 bread bags only have one D ring opposed to two. However, I think there should be a strap in the middle of the other two to fit on the belt, but this one only has two. Very unusual. Also I noticed the design shown in the third picture, very interesting. But I don think it means anything. Thanks
Hans k. Posted 10 June , 2020 Share Posted 10 June , 2020 (edited) Yours isn't a WW1 German issue bread bag. It's not even military, but looks like one of many types of post-WW1 commercial/political style of bread bag used by various German organizations. These often get mistaken for WW1 German bags. Here is an example of a 1915 dated WW1 issue bread bag. They had plain "dished" buttons and almost always had the left belt loop reinforced with leather and a central strap with a belt hook. These came with a long carrying strap that could be clipped ontto the two hooks on the underside of the bag, but they were seldom used this way and usually carried on the belt. I sent you a PM with a link to a bag which is very similar to yours. Hans Edited 10 June , 2020 by Hans k.
Thatww1pigeon Posted 10 June , 2020 Author Share Posted 10 June , 2020 Haha, good to know. Thought I was spot on with my guess, but I always had a hunch I might have been wrong. Although, I wonder why the left belt loop is reinforced with leather along with only one D ring, canteen perhaps? Also, do you know when this was phased out because I know the ww2 bread bags had two D rings. So maybe my bread bag was made a few years after ww1. I could be wrong though, thanks. Hans k. Posted 10 June , 2020 Share Posted 10 June , 2020 (edited) Your bread bag is a civilian/political version and most likely dates to the 1930s. By that time the German Army already used the 2 D-ring Model 1931 bread bag. During WW1 only the canteen was worn clipped onto the bread bag while during WW2 both the canteen and mess tin could be worn together on the M31 bread bag. Edited 10 June , 2020 by Hans k.
