Hi

In 1914 the German raider S.M.S. EMDEN captured or sank quite a few

allied merchant ships, British and foreign.

I am lookig to complie a list of men eligible for the award of the Mercantile

Marine Medal.

Can anyone suggest where and how I start?

Hi,

Some crew lists from 1915 have survived, and the National Maritime Museum had been encouraging the general public to get involved in a crowdsourcing exercise to get these transcribed.

I don't think there are surviving crew lists from other years.

Thanks,
Keith

Most of the crew lists for 1914 will survive in the Maritime History Archive at the Memorial University of Newfoundland in Canada.  These have been indexed by the Official Number of the vessel and can be searched here:

Get back to me here if you want the Official Numbers of EMDEN's victims.

Thank you for the replies.

Malcolm - it would be great if you could send the Official Numbers of Emden's victims - really appreciated.

Good Luck!  I have spot checked the two newest vessels, the BURESK and the CHILKANA, both of which had entered service only months before their loss, and Newfoundland holds at least one crew agreement for each.  If you want to know more about any of the individual ships, do let me know, as I have histories of many of the companies that owned them.
