RNCVR Posted 31 May , 2020 Author Share Posted 31 May , 2020 (edited) Both very nice photos of CPO Marsh Jane, he is wearing the rate badges of a Torpedo Gunners Mate (1920-32 timeframe). Best Wishes! Bryan Edited 31 May , 2020 by RNCVR
RNCVR Posted 31 May , 2020 Author Share Posted 31 May , 2020 Sennet hats dated from the Crimea time (1850's). Two period engraving\illustrations show sennet hats being worn by RN ratings. Thanks, Bryan

Best Wishes! Bryan I find the evolution of ratings badges and associated titles very confusing Bryan. At the linked website the badge is quoted as I mentioned (when did it change?): https://www.naval-history.net/WW2aaRN-PayTables00Ranks-Badges.htm Are the details at the website inaccurate? RNCVR Posted 31 May , 2020 Author Share Posted 31 May , 2020 Yes indeed, RN rates are very confusing to someone not familiar with them, & making it even more confusing is they changed (with addition of stars & crowns) as time progressed, & as the RN tried to adapt to changing times around turn of pre war century, then more changes post war. I will PM you Froggie but later in day, have to take grandchildren skiing now! Best... Bryan
themonsstar Posted 31 May , 2020 Share Posted 31 May , 2020 I picked up this seaman's box to FC.Allen last year, he joined up 1888 and finish his time 1899 I'm not sure if it was called up for WW1.
themonsstar Posted 31 May , 2020 Share Posted 31 May , 2020 (edited) The box is full of his journals, photographs, postcards, and other information and documents of his time in the Royal Navy I know his trade was Gunnery & torpedo. FROGSMILE Posted 31 May , 2020 Share Posted 31 May , 2020 (edited) What a superb collection, thank you for posting it. What with the brass knuckle dusters and the boxing photo it looks like he was pretty handy with his fists! He did well to survive two world wars! Retired in 1935 and back again in '39. He was mostly shore-based, teaching at VERNON when it was based at Roedean, counter-mines on the north-east coast, and by the end of the war based at Rosyth. He reminds me very much of Stanley Holloway who had the exact same twinkle in his eye! Do you know the precise year of the photo, was it during WW2? Almost certainly, I think; perhaps just after he re-joined. This one is probably from December 1920, when he married.

Pat Atkins Posted 1 June , 2020 Share Posted 1 June , 2020 Yes a great thread, many thanks to Bryan and all contributing. Some real gems here. Have to say I find much RN stuff (especially rates and badging) pretty esoteric and baffling, but it's a bit like a rollercoaster ride: I'm just clinging on, trusting to those with the skills, and enjoying the ride Cheers, Pat
RNCVR Posted 1 June , 2020 Author Share Posted 1 June , 2020 Thanks Pat! Yes, RN insignia & uniforms can be a somewhat rocky ride for sure! Stay on the coaster, you will get less seasick as time progresses & the ride becomes less rocky! I will post a few more CDV & RPPC's of RN ratings wearings sennets very soon, Best wishes! RNCVR Posted 4 June , 2020 Author Share Posted 4 June , 2020 They are very nice photos Jon, thanks for posting them, very nice they are ID'd! I love the sennet he is wearing. Did you note his bare feet in the first photo? This was normal during the age of sail rigged ships & even went into the Ironclad period. Cannot see much of his (right sleeve) rate badge but appears to be a SG (Seaman Gunner). I assume you have his ADM188 Service Record? Did her do a full career (22 yrs) or just 1st engagement? Best wishes! Bryan
