Black Watch Trench

Looking for information,diagrams,photos of this area for the attack on 30th July 1916 where the 1/7th BW were involved.

Basically, the trench is now the road between High Wood and Longueval.which you can see in the middle distance on the first photo and just behind the rolls of hay in the second.  You can travel along it virtually using google earth.

Attached to the July 1916 WD of 153 Infantry Brigade there are a number of sketches that show Black Watch Trench. Ancestry under Various Infantry Brigades - 51 Div - Piece 2870/1-6. Between pages 788 and 820.

Hi Vinnie

 

Just to illustrate line of Black Watch trench from the Don's photos (pity about the cable in the first one though:thumbsup:), this is looking back along the road that he mentions with High Wood on the horizon. I think there are trench maps around on the internet and certainly contemporary aerial views of the wood. Trench photos of High Wood are very rare; I think I've only ever seen one.
