Remembered Today:

Capt E L Chute

I'm looking for the service history of Captain E L Chute, I believe he was with the Duke of Wellington's Regt - but this seems to be a bit of a catch all unit, military research is not my forte.

All I know of him is that he served as an observer, one of around 20 British army officers, with a French naval aviation unit l'escadrille de Port Said from November 1915 to March 1916. He flew several missions deep into the Sinai desert, in an underpowered and unreliable Nieuport floatplane!

I think he may have returned to unit in March 1916 as l'escadrille was closing down at that time to be replaced by an RNAS unit, the East Indies and Egypt Seaplane Squadron. Some officers continued with the EIESS but Chute was not one of them.

Any information on his service before, after, and during, would be appreciated.

Thanks Ian

Hi Ian,

Edward Lennard Chute was indeed a Duke of Wellington's officer.  During WW1 he went to Egypt on 19/7/15 and is entitled to the 1914/15 Star as Capt., Duke of Wellington's W.R.Regt.

He is also noted as serving with the General List/Special List and RFC. He was also entitled to the BWM and VM as Captain. When he applied for his medals in 1923, he gave an address: Lupanda River, Jameson, N.E.Rhodesia.

He is also noted as having been in Nigeria in 1902 where he was awarded the Africa General Service medal with the clasp 'S. Nigeria 1902' at the time he was serving with the Southern Nigeria Regt.

Not sure if this helps?

Robert

As OO indicated = Medal Index Card at National Archives https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D1799421 and via Ancestry

Couldn't find an Incident/Casualty card at the RAF Museum so apparently not involved in an incident/accident of any significance it would seem [seemingly fortunate by the circumstances of many of the flyers of the day]

London Gazette = Search undertaken under "Edward Lennard Chute

1914

"Service battalions ... The undermentioned are granted the temporary rank of Captain: — Dated 16th September, 1914. ... Edward Lennard Chute" https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/28902/page/7297

Also searching using "Edward L Chute" and "E L Chute" would appear likely to be relevant too

Had to be careful to avoid Charles Lennard Chute!!

Thanks Gentlemen,

At least I now know his full name and regiment. Also, a few leads to follow up.

So, it certainly helps.
