Sgt. John Lawler Royal Munster Fusiliers

Hi again,

I cannot seem to find medal card and roll for this soldier - Service number 14111. Military Medal winner and killed in a train crash in France, March 1919. I have his effects register and Pension card but cannot find much else. Must be missing a trick here for sure.

All help appreciated.

I think that's just the MM card.

I have had a look: you are right

Thanks Lads.

I have checked to the best of my current ability before I posted this up. I take this is rare enough? Is it because he was drafted from elsewhere to the Munsters at the end of the war?

I tried searching Ancestry, the NA and Findmypast, by number only and by different spellings, without any success,  Have you tried looking on the medal roll for an adjacent number, (e.g. 14112 Edward Loftus), to see what's there?

That seems quite likely.  The Service battalions of the Irish regiments really struggled with recruiting replacements after 1916, in part because there was no conscription there for political reasons, as a result large numbers of men from English regiments were sent in reinforcement drafts to make battalions up to strength.  Many of these were from Northern English conurbations.

Good thinking, but this man was discharged from the Labour Corps 24/8/1919.

ForcesRecords seem to reconnect with him in 1919 after a 5 year break

His name does not seem to appear on the Medal Rolls for the Royal Munster Fusiliers (Ancestry).

Victory and British Medals

Piece No. 1705 - 270 of 329 Laws - Lawes / 273 of 329 Layton / 321 of 329 Little - seem to be alphabetical.

1914 - 1915 Star

Piece No. 2816

231 to 246 of 297

A few of the reports from the British Newspaper Archive 7/8 March 1919, sound horrendous.

Thank you all. Excellent contributions.

Unfortunately I am still stumped as to where to go from here. Did this man serve in another regiment and was brought back to the Munsters? He vanished from all records bar his military medal success.

I was sent this from a family member - dont know if it helps any. Military medal was stolen years ago I was told

What is inscribed on the edge of the medal with the ring suspension?

RMF Serial numbers in the 14000 series were transfers from the Connaught Rangers mid-1916

Thank you for this as it might help me uncover more about him. Aologies for delayed response as took a month off this project - for sanity reasons :)
