Hi, saw this Bakelite Prussian button but haven’t ever seen one made of this material. Does anyone know if they’re genuine or have any information on them?

I’m not sure, it may be another type of early plastic, just never seen a ww1 button made of a plastic material before

DBS,

watched one of those antique programmes only a couple of days ago and they visited the Bakelite Museum (can't imagine why I haven't). Though I didn't focus on it their were all number of colours of Bakelite (think bright red telephone) though I'm sure this innovation was post WW1.

Hello,

Could the button be made from something more natural such as horn?

That could be possible, it just looks more like it’s been moulded and wondered if someone had done it from original brass buttons making it a repro

That was my feeling too.

The button has been moulded I would say.

Can you mould horn? Not injection moulding, I'm sure.

I think that is likeliest.

Resin of some sort? Or celluloid?

Hello again,

Just found online,

tales from the supply depot blog

which mentions black buttons being made from horn, or more likely antler. The antler is converted into a mouldable paste.

Maybe this is a further clue? I found the blog through google images when searching for black military buttons. My phone won't let me put in the blog title as one word...

Cheers,

Owain.

Ah, that's a possibility.
