Kathryn Posted 22 May , 2020 Share Posted 22 May , 2020 Hello again. I have a nice grouping of items that purportedly belonged to a WWI nurse named Theresa Marie CORNISH. They were purchased at a house clearance in Sidmouth in 2012. The purchaser at that time wrote down some details about the nurse which included her name and the fact that she had served at a hospital in Boulogne, France during WWI and was evacuated from Guernsey during WWII.I have had no luck locating any information about her and would appreciate anything that you may find. Many thanks,Kathryn. alf mcm Posted 22 May , 2020 Share Posted 22 May , 2020 Kathryn, I have had a good look and can't see Theresa on any of the nursing records. She was probably not a professional nurse, more likely a Nursing VAD. The red cross armbands sometimes had official stamps on the inside, which may give some clues. Do you know if there is anything on your armband? Not only can I not see her on nursing records, I can't even find her in census records. The nearest I can find is a Q.A.I.M.N.S.R. service record https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C10802138 and medal card https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D8447527 for Theresa Maria Woodward. These can be downloaded for free at present, once you register. A look at the service record through the viewer shows that she served abroad, at 7 Stationary Hospital. The war diary is also available free. https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/7a26902fd5454a8eb980aae02387209e It appears to have been based in Boulogne from 1914 to 1919! Adittionaly, Theresa was awarded the Royal Red Cross, 2nd Class. Could it be that this is your Theresa and, either the wrong surname was recorded by the seller, or she married in later life. I have been unable to find a record of a marriage. Regards, Alf McM
Andrew Upton Posted 22 May , 2020 Share Posted 22 May , 2020 Personally, I'd be asking for my money back from the seller myself...
