Gus1914 Posted 21 May , 2020 Share Posted 21 May , 2020 I was looking at the war diary of the 1st Canadian Tunnelling Company from early 1917... The two main projects were the St Eloi mine and "Lock Hospital"... Does anybody know anything about "Lock Hospital" please...?
ajsmith Posted 21 May , 2020 Share Posted 21 May , 2020 The Lock Hospital position was located at Lock 6 on the Ypres-Comines canal, and the tunnel extended from there to a point beneath the British lines some 400 metres away. The project was eventually abandoned due to geological difficulties.
WhiteStarLine Posted 22 May , 2020 Share Posted 22 May , 2020 Couldn't see it on a 1917 trench map but here is its location;

ajsmith Posted 22 May , 2020 Share Posted 22 May , 2020 A bit of soldier black humour here of course a Lock Hospital is where soldiers went if they had a sexually transmitted disease.
mebu Posted 22 May , 2020 Share Posted 22 May , 2020 Query: why were they working behind German lines early 1917? Locks 7 or 8 would make more sense. Peter

Peter That's a spanner in the works because I think you are right about Lock 6...
ajsmith Posted 22 May , 2020 Share Posted 22 May , 2020 I did find there appears to be two Lock 6s the other one is just north of the one in the previous post referred to as Lock 6 bis (again). Still behind German lines mind you.
mebu Posted 22 May , 2020 Share Posted 22 May , 2020 I would suggest it is Lock 7. On 12/ May '17 1 Can Tun Coy record "Lock Hospital: Heavy shelling at end of Spoil Bank near works." This puts it close to Lock 7, preparatory for the Messines offensive. Peter
