Looking for any information on Scots Greys possibly based at Perth just before outbreak of WW1.My wife’s grandfather,David Stirling Whyte served in First War in ASC but we have recently seen an old photo of him with the words “Scots Greys at Perth camp”.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For what it's worth, the 1st (HQ) Company of the Highland Divisional Supply and Transport Column was based in Perth (Tay Street, to be precise), if that has any relevance. The Greys, as a cavalry regiment, would have had no Territorial units, although B Squadron of the 1st Scottish Horse had a drill station at Perth.

There are several newspaper articles from the summer of 1907 which mention that the Royal Scots Greys had made camp at the South Inch, Perth......but maybe that's too early a year for your ancestor?

Thanks for that...could quite well be his lot,we know he was a Territorial for several years before the war.

Many thanks for all your replie,as always,we glean more little snippets from each.

Dont have the photo at present though I have seen it.Could be e was attending their camp as he was in the unit based in Tay Street.

He later served with ASC(T) obviously as he was good with horses.

His Medal Roll entry shows him as Corporal Wheeler T/304 of the 1/1st Company of the HDT - ASC (TF) landing in France on 1 May 1915 and from 1 September 1916 serving as T4/236949 until disembodied on 25 March 1919.

  • 4 months later...

We came across this Attestation form in which he clearly mentions The Scots Greys, can’t quite make out what the rest says.

Waters muddied again.

I think it says he had previously served with the Royal Scots Greys for 3 years and 82 (?) days; it also says "having made a false statement on attestation", presumably the reason for his discharge.
