Folks,

Can anyone point me to records for the crash of a Bristol F2b Fighter '848' on 16 June 1918?  The aircraft likely belonged to No.8 Training Squadron.  I suspect the actual serial number was 'C848'.

Any help finding official records that describe the crash would be very much appreciated.

Kind regards,
Mark

The culprit was Sgt James Gamble of 8 TS, Witney. He took off in C848 at 14.40 and crashed from 100ft after the engine cut. The is no Casualty Card in the RAFM, which suggests that Gamble wasn't injured, but is was almost another month before he made his next flight (in C899 at Hythe, where he had joined 1 [Obs] SAG).

Hi Mick,

Thanks for the response.  What is the source of that info?  I have James Gamble's logbook which tallies with the details you have above.  I was wondering if there was a description of the actual crash to indicate the degree of damage to the airframe.  I have a photo of a wrecked Brisfit from James Gamble's collection and I'm wondering if it depicts C848.

Many thanks,
Mark
