Guest Posted 15 May , 2020 Share Posted 15 May , 2020 Trying to trace my Great Grandfather he was in the 11th Border Regiment I believe he lost an arm in the Second battle of Cambrai In Sept 1918. He was a bomber. Joined May 1917 and Discharged December 1918 with the Silver Badge. Came from Salford.
mancpal Posted 15 May , 2020 Share Posted 15 May , 2020 (edited) Billy at the moment the National Archives is free to search if you register with them. If the war diary of the 11th Border Regiment has been digitised you'll be able to download it and read for yourself what his movements/actions would have been. He is unlikely to be mentioned by name. Have you searched Ancestry to see if his service record survived? Its probable it hasn't but would answer most of your questions if your man is one of the 30% or so whos record survived the blitz. The Long Long Trail (linked above) will give you a very good start when researching an individual soldier or indeed his Regiment. Just one very minor point, Cheetham is Manchester not Salford. clk Posted 16 May , 2020 Share Posted 16 May , 2020 (edited) Hi Billy, An earlier wounding? Alfred is shown on this casualty list - link. The date of the list will postdate that of his actual wounding though. If you plod through the list looking for service records of the other men from his regiment, you may find a commonality of wounding dates (within a day, or so), from which you may be able to make a reasonable inference about Alfred, and then cross reference to the unit war diary. For example 32008 Beaty (1/Border Regiment) and 203275 Blanchard were both wounded on 20.11.1917. They were both 1/Border Regiment men though, so it would be better if you could find some records for any 11th Bn men on the list. It might also be worth looking for service files for men that had Border Regiment numbers near to his 28958 number. For example, those for 28963 Robson show: Image sourced from Findmypast That would seem to raise the possibility that Alfred might have been part of a draft of men that were transferred to the Border Regiment once they had arrived in France at 30 Infantry Base Depot. Further sampling would probably help. Regards Chris Edited 16 May , 2020 by clk
