Old Bid Posted 15 May , 2020 Author Share Posted 15 May , 2020 Leonard Jasper Brown. Now there is a Leonerd Brown listed but he is not right one. The one I am looking for was born in reading and lived in Brighton circa 1916. The one listed comes from barnsley. Regards
alf mcm Posted 15 May , 2020 Share Posted 15 May , 2020 Leonard was born on 18th December 1891. He died in Brighton in late 1977 or early 1978. https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=9841&h=12567799&tid=&pid=&usePUB=true&_phsrc=bmY39776&_phstart=successSource https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=7579&h=50205883&tid=&pid=&usePUB=true&_phsrc=bmY39777&_phstart=successSource https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=61596&h=3206030&tid=&pid=&usePUB=true&_phsrc=bmY39778&_phstart=successSource This last record shows he married Edith ?. If the marriage can be found to be during the war, then the certificate may give some military details. Similarly, birth certificates of any children born during the war may give similar details. Regards If Leonard served with either the 2/25th or 3/25th Battalions and only saw Home service, you may have problems in tracing him, especially if his Service Papers were amongst those destroyed in the Arnside Street Fire in 1940. It may be worth trying to trace down the Brighton Absent Voter list (if it has survived) for 1918/1919 as that may show his precise unit. It may also be worth checking the local Newspapers. My Grandfather (also a Reading man) served with the North Somerset Yeomanry and the Somerset Light Infantry during WW1 but only Home stations and did not enter a Theatre of war. Other than photographs of him in uniform, I can find absolutely not trace of him. Sepoy Edited 15 May , 2020 by Sepoy
Vlaamse Verhalen Posted 15 May , 2020 Share Posted 15 May , 2020 There's a Leonard Jasper Brown on the medal rolls for the London Regiment, but he served abroad with the 7th & 19th Battalions. What I don't know is if he was transferred from another battalion, prior to his disembarkation in October 1916. "Leonard Jasper" doesn't appear to have been at all common, although "Brown" most obviously is......
Old Bid Posted 15 May , 2020 Author Share Posted 15 May , 2020 Hi thanks for posts. I am lead to believe he was on active service in 1917 possibly captured. He was in St John ambulance in Brighton prior to going abroad. An entry in their records shows the following,
Vlaamse Verhalen Posted 15 May , 2020 Share Posted 15 May , 2020 The Leonard Japser Brown who served with the 1/19th London Regiment (Pte. 354367) was captured on 24th March 1918 "on the Somme". Too many coincidences not to have been the same man....?

Regards It's all held online by the International Committee of the Red Cross Leonard's index page is here If you then enter those three reference numbers (with the P.A. and R prefixes), they'll take you to specific ledger pages that record his stay at the Kaiser's pleasure. By the way, although his place of capture does switch from the Somme to (specifically) Ytres, in those records, it also confirms he was born in Reading, in 1892, and was living in Brighton. Old Bid Posted 15 May , 2020 Author Share Posted 15 May , 2020 Sussed it out now. Thank you once again never used this site before, been looking for this chap for ages.👍 Regards
Vlaamse Verhalen Posted 15 May , 2020 Share Posted 15 May , 2020 I took a quick gander at his GRO birth reg. & December 1891 looks very much correct: he was registered in the first quarter of 1892, with his mother's maiden name confirmed as Jasper. The ICRC site takes a little practice, I must agree.....here's Leonard's entries. The second one is on a page that's had 'Munster II' handwritten across the top which, I assume, must refer to a camp where he was being held at that time. Please don't ever give up with the digging & unearthing......not more than a week ago I discovered a "fifth" great grandfather, of whom neither I, nor my Mum, knew a single thing about....who served with the Lovat Scouts during the Great War, but sadly died aboard a hospital ship, after campaigns at Gallipoli & in the Egyptian desert. With more & more records being made available online, the clues soon begin to mount up
Old Bid Posted 15 May , 2020 Author Share Posted 15 May , 2020 Yes with more stuff online more unknown stories emerge. I did a quick translation Munster II being a camp in Rennbahn and seems he was wounded with shrapnel right side. Brilliant result thanks to you.
